Industry challenges

Common challenges in independent retail

In-store service and phone coverage compete for the same staff. These gaps cost sales and repeat visits.

  1. Interrupted in-store service

Staff leave customers or deliveries to answer questions about hours and parking.

  2. Unanswered stock inquiries

Callers asking about availability hang up before anyone can check.

  3. Outdated listings

Holiday and seasonal hours on your Google Business Profile fall out of date.

  4. Uncertain email consent

It is unclear which customers have consented to receive promotional email.

How ReadyOffice addresses them

Regulatory considerations

Regulatory points relevant to this sector, each sourced from an official government page. This is general information, not legal or tax advice; requirements vary by province.

  • Holiday closures (Ontario)

Ontario's Retail Business Holidays Act says retail businesses must close on seven holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. There are exceptions, for example for some small shops, some kinds of goods and tourist areas, and the City of Toronto is not covered by the mandatory closures. Your business profile's holiday hours are what the assistant tells callers. [1]

  • Email and text offers

Canada's anti-spam legislation requires consent before you send an offer by email or text. A purchase gives implied consent for up to two years and an inquiry for six months; after that you need express consent. Each message must name your business, give a mailing address and a way to reach you, and include an unsubscribe that you honour within 10 business days. [2]

  • Collecting GST/HST at the till

A shop must register for the GST/HST and collect it once its taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters; under that threshold it is a small supplier. [3]

Common questions

Can it tell callers whether something is in stock?

It answers from your business profile, which covers what you carry in general. For a specific item or size it takes the caller's name and number for a staff member to check and call back, so it never promises stock you don't have.

Will my holiday hours be right everywhere?

Your hours live in one business profile. The assistant reads them on calls, your website shows them, and posts to your Google Business Profile keep them up to date.

How do I know who I'm allowed to email?

Campaigns go only to people who agreed, with your details and an unsubscribe, and you get a warning before a contact's permission runs out.
